Hannah’s Bar is staging the return of Liverpool Calling next Wednesday, October 24 featuring live performances from Jewel Thief, Dirtblonde, Billy Ruffian, Fraktures and a poetry set from Tom George. Doors 8pm, entry ã2.50.
Brainchild of Dirtblonde’s Ivan and Lula, Liverpool Calling, is a continuation to the hip club night, F*CK, which stormed the then-new Korova Bar back in October 2005.
Bringing together exciting new bands such as Popular Workshop, Oxfam Glamour Models, Underground Railroad and, a small Dundee act named, The View, F*CK, proved a mini-cult hit.
Local bands were also frontrunners with Liverpool talent represented in the form of Asbos, Jewel Thief, The Affection and The Howls, while also banging out an eclectic array of music at the club night by the likes of Billy Childish, Comanechi and Franz Ferdinand B-sides.
Now, in the final quarter of 2007, Liverpool Calling returns with more new Liverpool music, psychedelic lights and an altogether feel of Club UFO circa-1967.
The club night is not all on offer from Ivan and co. with the release of a cracking self-titled compilation which is available for FREE in shops around Liverpool (more specifically Bold Street and Lark Lane) featuring 14 tracks by among others, resident hipsters Zoe and Chris’ Sex Education, Head of State, Straight Out Of Moscow and Aeris Presley.
A full list of outlets stocking the record can be found, along with all Liverpool Calling information, can be found here.
Join in the fun from next Wednesday upstairs at Hannahs.
Meanwhile St Helens folk-rock guitarist Mark Wilson is set to feature at The Zanzibar on Friday with The Murmurs of Tension before performing at Virgin Megastore in Manchester as part of the In The City Festival.
More information can be found here.
I can’t recommend Mark more highly since his early days performing at the Zoo Bar in his resident Tellinz base. He’s a latter day John Martyn, with echos of Drake, without resorting to any of today’s cliche-ridden pitfalls. Go see!
