Manchester Collective

Manchester Collective are coming to Liverpool, Getintothis’ Mark Flannery has news of a thrilling and dramatic production.

If the thought of opera usually leaves you grimacing, think again. Manchester Collective are touring Pierrot Lunaire this month, visiting the Invisible Wind Factory on November 23.

Founded in 2016, Manchester Collective produce and create original, daring and immersive experiences for the audience. They draw the audience as close to the performers as possible, which helps to bring about a much more visceral feeling.

Performed in English, and translated by David Pountney, Manchester Collective will bring about the stimulating and perilous world of Arnold Shoenberg’s play to life, with Emma Doherty overseeing production.

It tells the bizarre story of a moonstruck clown, incorporating 21 highly symbolic poems by Belgian symbolist Albert Giraud, revolving around violence, death, madness, sex, dreams and trauma, which are performed as musical pieces by the Collective’s orchestra, with Australian mezzo-soprano, Lotte Betts-Dean taking on the role of the female protagonist and libretto, David Pountney providing vocal dexterity.

With what is known as the Pierrot ensemble, a flute, piano, clarinet, cello and violin will help to provide the musical accompaniment to Giraud’s grotesque words.

With the stage consisting of a single four poster bed, and set over the course of one night, Pierrot Lunaire is a surreal experience, with a script that could only be described as offensive, and with music which is at times beautiful, wild and strange.

Elizabeth Alker of BBC Radio 3 and 6 Music, will guide the audience through Arnold Shoenberg’s controversial and unsettling work, which shocked the audience at its premiere in 1912. It’s a challenging piece of work, yet one that has continued to confound and intrigue those who have experienced it for over a hundred years. Manchester Collective’s mission is to create “radical, human experiences through music, for everyone”, and this is one opportunity to do just that.
