Ahead of their upcoming Liverpool show , Clean Cut Kid take a break from pre-production to submit their 13 Questions to Getintothis’ Lewis Ridley.
Liverpool’s own Clean Cut Kid are playing at Arts Club on November 30, a date which is bound to be another rapturous homecoming.
They’ve been on our radar since 2012, when Mike Halls (lead vocals, guitar), Evelyn Halls (backing vocals, keys), Ross Higginson (drums) formed as a Liverpool grassroots music collective, they have just added and new member Gareth Bullock (bass guitar) to the melting pot. It wasn’t until just last year that their work was able to form an album, with debut LP Felt.
It featured, amongst others, scuzzy breakup hit We Used To Be In Love, the feature track for support slots with the likes of The Courteeners, a tour which featured a night at Echo Arena.
Now, they start their Give Love Tour, which calls in at Glasgow, Leeds, London and more before a final sold out Liverpool date as they prepare to release their second studio album.
In amongst preparing for said tour, Clean Cut Kid bared all for Getintothis’ 13 questions and tell us about worst gigs, roast dinners and, erm, farting on the Wu tang Clan.
1. Where are you and what are you doing?
‘We’ve been locked away for the last 12 months building our own studio and self-producing our second record. Now that’s finished, we’re about to begin releasing it and touring.’
2. How is that working out?
‘It’s the best decision we ever made. Every extra person you add to a recording just waters-down your dream a little more. If you have the means and resources to make your own record… it’s definitely the way to go.’
3. What is the last gig you went to?
‘We saw a recreation of The Last Waltz concert at the Phil last week.’
4. Recommend one band or album that you think we should check out
‘Courtney Marie Andrews– Honest Life’
Liverpool music gig guide: Mogwai, Seasick Steve, Yves Tumor, PIP BLOM and more
5. What’s your first memory as band?
‘We have a new full time member on bass – Gareth Bullock. We brought him in to the studio to jam on a track called Plasticine from the new record. From the first few bars we knew CCK would be a new level with him in the line-up. Magic.’
6. What is the worst gig you’ve ever done?
‘It was actually Neighbourhood Festival a few months back. There was a patching issue to the stage so Ev and Ross, had nothing going to their in ear monitors. In order to hear some vocals from the PA, Ev shouted her parts at the top of her lungs in the first tune: instantly losing her voice. As you can imagine, this wasn’t ideal considering half of our new record has her doing the lead part. GIG FROM HELL.’
7. What is your favourite meal?
‘A good Roast Dinner is impossible to beat.’
8. Can you cook?
‘We’re all foodies and we all cook, yeah.’
9. Tell us a secret
‘Mike once farted on Wu-Tang Clan backstage at Bestival 2013. Crop dusted and split.’
10. What’s the best night out you’ve ever had?
‘SXSW 2016. 7 days of incredible gigs (played and watched) was just a giant week-long night out….and it was like living in a dream.’
11. When was the last time you laughed until you cried?
‘Only 2 days ago, sitting in Brewdog with our mate Rich Turvey. We were buzzing off this boss dude we’d been writing with.’
12. What’s your hangover remedy?
‘Orange Lucozade, Nice ‘n’ Spicy Nick Nacks and round the clock ibuprofen.’
13. Vinyl, CD, MP3 or Streaming?
‘Vinyl and Streaming – the hipsters choice.’
