Alessi’s Ark
Alessi’s Ark is on tour in 2018, stopping by in Liverpool at 81 Renshaw, Getintothis’ Peter Goodbody predicts a special night.
Talking about her Alessi’s Ark moniker, singer songwriter Alessi Laurent-Marke says: “I liked the idea of a boat, where everybody is welcome, even friends that are geographically far away – we are together”
Having released her fourth album Love Is The Currency, in October last year, she is embarking on a 2018 tour which will see her playing both in Japan and USA as well as a handful of dates in the UK, including a WAAIL Records promoted stop off at Liverpool’s 81 Renshaw – a venue that seems to be getting ever more adventurous in its line up.
“The core theme of ‘Love is the Currency’ is our limitless ability to heal one another though music, healthy love, healing frequencies and working through previously unprocessed grief.” says Alessi, explaining the driving force of her new album. “With Cut The Cord, I wanted to make a song that could encourage people to save themselves from fear and the grip of toxicity’s many guises.”
The album was produced by long term Maccabees engineer Jago Jago, and written in large part with Will White (brother of Maccabees’ Felix and Hugo), Alessi describes her new album as a “family affair”, blessed with the care of many friends and brothers. Jago Jago’s brother Memby appears on drums throughout the album, and Felix White – who’s recommendation brought Alessi, Jag and Will together – plays guitar on the single ‘Wives’.
Alessi’s music hints at folk pop as well as more ambitious and abstract palettes of the Cocteau Twins or Charlotte Gainsbourg. From uploading home recordings to Myspace to working with Bright Eyes in Nebraska and touring the U.K. with Jenny Lewis and M.Ward it’s been a long and winding road for Alessi which has no doubt shaped her songs. The album is full of very personal tales, self discovery and shared experience, told in a mixture of sonic settings; the California desert, alpine air and ocean sprays all evoked in unfussy yet expansive production.
Support on the night will come from Charlotte Carpenter and Hooton Tennis Club offshoot, Seatbelts, who will be promoting new single Hey Tiger, due to be released at the end of March.
It promises to be a special evening.
