Africa Oyé 2017

As Africa Oyé 2017 sees thousands flock to celebrate the 25th edition prior to events that continue the celebration, Getintothis’ Amaan Khan brings the full report.

Africa Oyé broke its attendance records this year with over 80,000 people flocking to Liverpool’s Sefton Park to celebrate its 25th anniversary.

The festival saw artists from 12 different countries on its main stage alone with diverse african acts like MokoombaMax RomeroOdemba OK All Stars alongside some local names like Nutribe & Butcha B and Anwar Ali & Dave Owens, in addition to the many other artists at the various dance battles, DJ sets etc. It wasn’t just the crowd which was busier than before, the festival also saw a greater number of workshops and stalls that were very well received.

On the festival’s extraordinary success this year, artistic director Paul Duhaney remarks, “We couldn’t have asked for a better weekend for our 25th anniversary. The acts, the weather and an incredible audience – I don’t think we’ve had a festival quite like it across both days. Oyé is blessed that a city like Liverpool exists – a city where a festival showcasing artists that a lot of the audience will be hearing for the first time, yet embraces them like old friends. The people have turned our little festival into something really quite special.”

Continuing the celebration of 25 successful years, the #Oye25 banner has announced more related events:
