With September offering a wealth of electronic music, Getintothis’ Ste Knight tells you what to listen to and where to go this month.
September is here. That means two things. Firstly, pretty soon our city will be overrun with pimple-faced eighteen-year-olds with funny voices drinking all our ale. Secondly, it means the clubbing season is back in full swing, and so there’s a bucket-load of great nights coming up this month.
There’s also plenty to be listening to, as Dave Seaman and The 7th Plain both drop some serious bombs for September’s single and album of the month respectively. So, without further ado, let’s have a gander at what we’ve got in store.
Album of the Month
The 7th Plain – Chronicles
Luke Slater‘s The 7th Plain project is no newcomer to the scene. He was releasing material under this monicker between 1993 and 1995, and despite not putting out a great deal of music under this name, he still made a great impression in terms of ambient techno.
A-Ton, an offshoot of techno powerhouse Ostgut-ton, have clubbed together with Slater to bring us a collection of his unreleased rarities, Chronicles, from his time as The 7th Plain and it still sounds as fresh as it did back in the early 90’s.
Eschewing the banging, blistering techno sound that he was smashing out under his own name, Slater has pulled together some fantastic tracks which err more on the ambient side of electronic music. There’re some nods towards the Motor City (T-Funk States being a case in point), however, there is certainly more of an IDM leaning with this record.
The 7th Plain certainly has sci-fi elements to it, and paints a pixelated, retro-futuristic picture of another world. The jazzy grooves and alt-dimensional feeling contained within the record makes for some lovely listening – ideal for wigging out with a smoke and your headphones on.

Bill Patrick
1: Bill Patrick – Rubix, The Shipping Forecast, September 10
New York producer and DJ, Bill Patrick, heads over the pond to Rubix on September 10 for a night of tech-house at The Shipping Forecast. Bill has played the likes of DC10 and Fabric in the past, proving popular at those and the many other clubs and festivals at which he has graced the decks. Expect a slightly more psychedelic twist on the traditional tech-house formula.
Kepler Odyssey by Global Goon and Captain Johnson
2: Global Goon, Mark Forshaw – Uperative! The Kaz Garden, September 17
If you don’t know who Global Goon is, then why not? The guy is somewhat of a legend in the old IDM circles, and with good reason – he not only comes from Lydiate, the epicentre of intelligent dance music, but he also signed to Rephlex Records, where he released his debut album, Goon. He’ll be playing some nice squidgy acid, while local stalwart Mark Forshaw will be backing him up with some techno loveliness, as will Upitup! favourite DJ Doughnut Burger. It’s even free, so get your arse down there – no excuses!
The Wonder Pot presents Helena Hauff
3: Helena Hauff – The Wonder Pot, 24 Kitchen Street, September 22
German DJ and producer, Helena Hauff, is making her debut appearance in Liverpool at The Wonder Pot at the city’s worst kept secret, 24 Kitchen Street. We urge you, nay beg, you to head on down to this event, as it is going to an absolute killer set if previous performances are anything to go by. Hauff tends to spin a melting pot of electronic music, from electro to acid. Jacques Malchance and Or:la take the mantle to get you warmed up for Hauff. Get involved.

4: Henry Saiz – 303, Williamson Tunnels, September 24
303 return on September 24 with the latest instalment of their All Night Long series with Spanish producer Henry Saiz at the helm. Saiz is an exciting producer to see in the booth at 303. He often introduces a live element into his set, so who knows what surprises he’ll have up his sleeves for his 7-hour marathon in the venerable techno tunnels.
Perc and Truss
5: Perc and Truss – The Wonder Pot and Cold Blooded, 24 Kitchen Street, September 30
There’s a super special treat in store courtesy of The Wonder Pot and Cold Blooded; Perc and Truss will be in full effect at 24 Kitchen Street for a night of no-holds-barred techno. Seriously, expect a pummeling for the ear drums, these two take no prisoners and make no mistake. If you like your techno hard then this one is for you.
Single of the Month
Dave Seaman drops the 50th release for Selador Records, the label he co-runs with Liverpool’s very own Steve Parry. Nightfalls is a tech-house banger, and it’s ready to go off in your ears. Seaman has produced some ace tracks over the years, and Nightfalls is no exception.
Sampling the vocal from Ananda Project‘s Cascades of Colour, the track certainly has an old school, housey feel to it – especially with the repeating piano chord which is introduced at the start of the track. However, the overly happy feel of early piano-centric house is done away with, as the track has a dark, brooding feel to it, which is ideal for use as some peak time party fodder.
Remixes are provided by Lee van Dowski, Chymera, and OC & Verde. This one is gonna be a massive dancefloor destroyer, so get all over it, immediately.
